What is the difference between an Active USB Hub and a Passive (Non-Active) USB Hub?
An active (or self-powered) USB Hub is one that has a built-in power supply that you can plug into the wall. The power that it draws from the wall is used to turn-on and power the devices you connect to the hub. This would allow you to connect both high and lower-powered devices without a problem. A passive (or bus-powered) USB Hub does not need an external power source. Passive hubs draw power directly from the USB port it is connected to. The downside to this is that since there is no external source of power, a passive hub is limited to only low power USB devices. The number of devices that can be connected to a passive USB hub depends on how much power they need to draw from the source and how much power is available. Active USB hubs can theoretically support up to 127 individual USB devices.

What is USB 2.0 and how fast is USB 2.0?
USB 2.0 replaced USB 1.1 as the standard for modern-day USB devices. While USB 1.1 offered transfer rates ranging from 1.5Mbps (low speed) to 12Mbps (full speed), USB 2.0 can operate up to 40 x faster with speeds up to 480Mbps (high speed).
