What is VGA / SVGA?

VGA (Video Graphics Array) and SVGA (Super VGA) are the video graphics standards long used for computer video outputs.  Typically a VGA / SVGA cable has 15-pins and is used to connect a standard computer video card to a standard CRT monitor.  Some LCD monitors also support the 15-pin VGA / SVGA standard.

What is a Male-to-Male Cable?  What is a Male-to-Female Cable?

Male and Female declarations define what the pin orientation is on one side of the connector.  A male pin is one that physically sticks out of the socket.  A female pin is a hole that houses a male pin.  For example, a male-to-male cable has male connectors (pins sticking out) on both sides of it.  Typically a male-to-male monitor cable would be used to connect a video card to a monitor.  A male-to-female cable will have one male side and one female side.  Typically a male-to-female monitor cable would be used as an extension cable.  Male-to-Male can also be referred to as M-to-M and Male-to-Female as M-to-F, etc.
