Description

Get ultra-fast data access by adding an NVMe U.2 SSD to your computer. This U.2 to PCIe adapter lets you add a high-speed, U.2 (4-lane PCIe) 2.5"" NVMe SSD, such as the Intel® 750 Series drive, to a PC with an available x4 PCI Express expansion slot.

You can mount the PCIe U.2 drive directly onto the adapter, giving you an easy and convenient way to improve your system performance and expand overall internal storage.

Boost your system speed and performance

The expansion card lets you take full advantage of the fast performance and compact size of PCIe U.2 internal solid-state drives. The adapter connects directly to your computer motherboard to support an NVMe U.2 PCIe-based SSD through ultra-fast x4 PCIe. With the U.2 PCIe-based drive in place, the adapter gives your computer a significant speed boost.

Easy to install

The expansion card is equipped with a full-profile bracket and doesn't require an adapter cable for installation, this helps to reduce clutter and simplifies system builds. The drive connects directly to the SFF-8639 connector on the adapter, and the adapter connects directly to the computer motherboard.

The adapter is compatible with PCIe 3.0 motherboards and is also backward compatible with PCIe 2.0 and PCIe 1.0.

The PEX4SFF8639 is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

  • Mount a 2.5in U.2 NVMe SSD into your PC or server using an available PCIe expansion slot

Solid and functional
I purchased the startech u.2 to pci-e adapter to use for testing a few dell nvme ssds and it’s been working great! I’m using it with a super old pc but it is plug and play, worked right away. I am able to mount the dell/samsung mz-wki3t20 3.2tb drive and run a few softwares to test the health without any issues. I as well ran a benchmark test but unfortunately the testing pc is really old, therefore the performance is no where close to what the ssd is capable of pushing. The quality of the adapter is very solid as well, i am not gentle with it at all, i have been pulling it in and out, man handling it and it still performs. Hopefully i can test the adapter with a newer system to see what kind of speed these ssds are capable of. Overall, it’s a great product!

This is the way to u.2 if board lacks native u.2
This allowed me to attach my u.2 samsung pm953 1.9tb to my machine (evga z370 micro) and eliminated the strange issue i had with the prior setup (an intel powered m.2 to u.2 adapter). With the m.2 to u.2 adapter i had, the system would power itself back on a few seconds after any os-initiated shutdown/suspend. Switching to this method of connection fixed that. U.2 nvme drives are still quite rare, and non-hedt/server boards tend to lack appropriate connectors. If you have an x4 slot to spare and a u.2 ssd you want to hook up, try one of these first.

Solid product. Compatibility will come down to motherboard and os. Recommended
I've been benching a lot of m.2 and u.2 nvme ssds for work lately. While you'll find m.2 slots (1 or 2, anyway) on many consumer-level desktop motherboards, i haven't found many workstation/server boards with u.2 interfaces, unless they're supposed to be in a 1u or 2u form-factor server chassis. So that's where this item comes in. It's decidedly no-frills, but that's not really much for this board to do. It's essentially just taking a pci-e x4 slot and giving you an sff-8639, along with enough card to screw the actual ssd to. I took this board and put it into a variety of supermicro, tyan, asus, and hp servers/workstations. Generally, my findings were good. In all cases the drive was usable, and in most cases it could be made the boot drive. Check your os compatibility. As well, you'll want to make sure your motherboard chipset supports it. So, a device like this basically a commodity. It either works, or it doesn't. There aren't really opportunities for differences in performance, from brand to brand. This item worked with several intel u.2 nvme ssds, and there's no reason to think it wouldn't do the same with any other ssds. In a top-position horizontal riser, there's no interference with the lid of the server cases... And that's about the only thing i think could possibly go wrong. Recommended.

Plug 'n play
Attached an intel p3700 2tb 2.5" ssd and plugged it in a pci-e gen3x4 (mechanical x16) slot in a dell precision 5820 tower workstation. Fired up windows 10 pro and blazing fast 2tb storage working well. Measured over 400k iops random read of 4kb size and ~2.6gb/s in sequential read throughput. Of course, performance depends on the ssd and the system, but the benchmark confirms that the adapter is working as expected.
