FAQ & Section Info
With a new release of processing chips come a new set of technical questions. Among these questions is whether or not your existing socket LGA 1150 cooler will be compatible with your new Skylake CPU.
Though the LGA 1151 Skylake processors have changed in size, power consumption, and overall efficiency you'll be glad to know that you don't have to replace your current cooler just yet. The LGA 1150 cooler will still work with these new processors and this is due to the lack of change on the current CPU backplate.
Though your cooler will still work, you may want to consult your processors TDP rating to ensure your LGA 1150 cooler provides adequate airflow to dissipate the heat of your new Intel skylake processor.
Yes! With the release of the Intel 6th Generation Skylake Processors, will come in a new slew of new fans. The older 1150, 1155, and 1156 fans are still compatible with the new 1151 socket. So to be clear, the Haswell lines that were popular for years and years designed for the LGA1150 socket will work with the new LGA1151 socket.
We get asked this question a lot as people want to use an 1156 cooler on 1151 socket, etc.
Here's a compatibility chart explaining which processor fans will work with your LGA socket:
