But build quality and general design is good for this price
It looks quite cheap and plastic when you look at it closer, but build quality and general design is good for this price. It reeds all i need (cd, dvd-roms, dvd's), but sometime lugs with dvd-roms, i use it rearely, maybe once per 2-3 months or less and for this kind of usage it is ok. Especially i like it's slot loading, for me it is more comfortable. I did not need any extra cables or drivers to use it with my windows 8.1 laptop. I cannot tell how it will work in heavy duty mode but if you need some good looking dvd-recoreder for your laptop and rare cases of usage of your old dusty discs - then you will be satisfied.

Not good in installing cd softwares, including it's own !
I'm giving this 2 stars only bec. It will not play the included cd in the package with the manual, demo softwares (cyber link)--the "super multi drive install disc" when i inserted the cd in the player connected to my dell laptop with the new windows 10 it struggled for several minutes before it could even display the files on it, and when i click auto-run file, it did not open the files for installation. Basically the cd disc is useless. It will not play blu-ray dvd. But it did play my dvd movie and video. I'm not sure if it will play or install an install cd disc, just like the one that's included. It did make me a "windows 10 system repair disc". But it as well will not read the cd for my malware malbytes software--it just ejected it right away after initially displaying the files after i clicked the "set-up"---when i re-inserted the cd again, it ejected it right away twice! However, it did install my quicken willmaker 2014 with no problem. I just don't understand why this dvd writer/player is so picky !!

Sleek and slick drive for a dying media breed
Pros:1. Looks clean and simple. Looks real similiar to the mac superdrive2. Runs pretty quiet and low vibration depending on media as it varies i've found.3. Slot drive = sexy vs tray dvd drive. Worth that alone imo and why i bought it4. Dvd/cd's slide in and out easy peasy with slot drive, much nicer then tray drives.Cons:1. No usb 3.0 connection for faster speed, gotta get a blu ray drive for that2. Slower vs internal drive but i knew this ahead of time2. Pricey for what it is, a slot drive shouldn't be that much more vs tray, so a bit of a rip off. Wait for a coupon or sale like i did for better price of $353. Included software is beyond worthless4. For the price, an included basic carrying case would have been nice after 22 years of a dedicated cd dvd drive usage since my early days of computing, i finally decided that it was no longer really viable or useful to have a bulky drive in my gaming rig anymore.I however and old school and still prefer getting phsyical media for my money so i still wanted the ability to load games up the good old fashioned way even if internet is a bit faster but data caps suck are are a way of life for me.But i've always liked the usage of slot drive dvd players vs trays and because they are becoming rare, i jumped at the chance at lg's model while it it had a coupon sale at newegg. Eventually, they won't make them anymore as the media itself is slowly dying out due to usb drive and fast internet. Kinda sad to see the beginning of the end of computers ionic media. If you don't mind paying a little extra for the sleek look and usage of a slot drive vs tray external dvd, you really can't get better then this other then a real superdrive from mac for an obscene price.

Lg multiblade is great!
It arrived in good shape, plugged it into my imac and started writing a dvd project immediately, i have only had it for a short while so, i don't know about durability but so far so good. I as well own an apple super drive that only works on my newer macs and the lg looks just like it. Granted the apple is aluminum and the lg is plastic (good plastic) but, for the price lg works just as well & sitting on the desktop it really doesn't matter. Fyi, had i found the lg first, i wouldn't have gotten the apple drive.

Does the job
I've usually built computers having internal dvd drives, but my most recent build is in a super-compact enclosure that has no drive bays. I still have a periodic need for an optical drive, primarily to import audio tracks from cds. This drive does the job.I'm running a fedora linux system. No special treatment was needed in order for the os to recognize the drive.

Works, but noisily. Calls attention to itself while playing a cd.
Seems to work ok, but it's very noisy. When it takes in a disc, the mechanism makes a very loud noise & it pulls the disc in very quickly. The actuator makes constant noise while ripping a cd. Didn't try to burn a cd or dvd, nor did i play a dvd. I had it installed in my desktop setup as an easily accessible drive, but its behavior wasn't what i wanted on my desk. I actually had to buy an apple superdrive to get one of high quality for the desk & it is very quiet & polite when inserting & ejecting the disc.
