Installed perfectly on a new dell vostro desktop
Installed card reader into a very new dell vostro and works very well, the fit is perfect and the usb socket in the reader is upside down and as well fits tight, it makes a good usb port for something that is more permanent that you can keep plugged in all the time, like a camera cable, i mostly use micro sd port and it has a very good fit.I purchased this reader because reviews showed it has a better fitting port for micro sd, on other cheaper card readers that do not have good fitting micro sd ports, it will cause faster wear on micro sd cards, the poor fitting ports will kind of catch before card will insert, and damage it . This unit has perfect fit tolerances for the micro sd card port. The usb port does have a tight fit.

I would not recommend it to anyone
After a month, this unit stopped working right and has become very unreliable. I would not recommend it to anyone.

Nice drive, very useful for the humongous capacity cards today, just the cf card bay needs to be used with caution.
Installed in my windows 7 pro tower right alongside of the 3.5" floppy drive. I don't know why i just didn't take the floppy drive out and put this in instead. I can't even recall the last time i used a floppy disc. With the various memory cards hold huge amounts of data this is the portable media drive type that you want.I must admit the cf card bay insert area is super shallow as reported by the other reviewers. If you look at the second photo of this listing you can see just how shallow it is. With it being that shallow it is possible to misalign it during insertion. Of course with a little extra care you can avoid the problem but intuitively you want to just reach under the desk and insert it. So yes it is a design flaw. The rest of the drive works great. The attaching cable is not a plug into the back of the drive type, but rather a permanently attached cable that enters through a jacketed cable in the rear of the card reader. The main computer i am using these days is an hp i7 laptop that has a single combo drive in it which as well takes cf cards with the proper depth so this drive works well in my setup. My windows 7 pro machine that houses the star tech 3.5" front bay card reader is always on since i use it as a windows media center pc automatically recording tv shows via over the air waves antenna. So if i have some cards to read that are not readable by the card reader built into my laptop, i can just access the win 7 machine via windows remote desktop and transfer files etc. That way. I'm not bragging but rather just sharing this type of setup in the event someone else might have the same configuration.Included in the package are the mounting screws; all 4 of them. So overall it is a 5 star card reader bay but with the cf design potential for a problem i had to take one star off.

Great addition to a home editing station!
This was a nice addition to my home computer, as i have been upgrading it to an editing station and having a way to simply pop an sdcard in without cluttering my desk is nice. Some technical know how is required here, but if you are purchasing this you probably already know that. A usb2.0 header is needed on your motherboard, so be mindful before you purchase. It includes mounting screws and a small informational pamphlet with instructions. At the moment, i have only used the sd and microsd slots, as i don't have any devices that run the other memory formats. Read/write speed is comparable to a desk sitting usb card reader, and being 2.0 don't expect 3.0 speeds.

Couldn?€™t get mine completely working ?€“ might be my config?€?
I added this to an open 3 ½ inch bay in my dell studio/xps 9000 tower desktop (an i7 machine). My machine has a media bay on the top that acts sort of funky so i wanted to replace it, but this starttech was not wide enough to fit the oem configuration, so i added it to an open front facing bay instead. That part was easy. The next part was not easy, and in the end, it still might not be right as most of the functions of the media bay are not working for me. I did not have an open usb header port on my motherboard, but i did have a pci-e usb 3.0 expansion card in my machine, and it had an internal usb 3.0 port that was not in use. I know that this media reader is only usb 2.0, but the 3.0 card claimed to be 2.0 backward compatible. I had to purchase a cable (sienoc 19 pin usb3.0 female to 9 pin usb2.0 male motherboard cable adapter co...) to connect the media reader (which has a 9 pin (male) connector at the end of the supplied cable that is connected to the media reader) to my usb 3.0 internal port. (my other option was to purchase a cable that was twice as expensive as this one, and route that cable outside of my box to one of the usb 2.0 ports on the back of my machine?€? those cables are not easy to find, and that sounded messy). After connecting the media reader cable to my 9pin cable and connecting the other end with its 19pins to the usb 3.0 internal port, the media reader started to work, sort of.I?€™m able to read usb 2.0 (and usb 3.0) memory sticks with it. I will say that the usb port is ?€˜upside down?€™ ?€“ with the block on the bottom, whereas all of my other usb ports on my machine and on my external hubs have the block on the top. Not a major issue, just say?€™n.When i tried to connect my iphone 5s to this usb port, it didn't work (it kept connecting and disconnecting). When i use the same apple cable to connect my iphone to the other usb ports on my machine those work fine. The issue might be my connection to the internal usb 3.0 pci-e card to the new internal cable that's the issue, so i won't blame this all on the media card reader. However, the sd card reader and the compactflash reader ports on the media reader do not work for me. As well, even if the cf reader port did work, it?€™s upside-down too! (see the picture). The sd port is right-side-up. There is no indication (labeling / pictures) on the media reader indicating which way the media cards go into this thing.Overall, not happy. I?€™ll leave it in the machine for the extra front side usb port since i?€™ve already stuck some money into getting this working. I'm hoping for your sake that if you connect this to an open usb 2.0 header port on your motherboard that this will all work for you.

Good product, great price, works perfectly
This card reader works perfectly... Or at least the sd, micro sd, and usb ports i was able to test work perfectly. I didn't have an external 3.5" bay in my case, so i purchased a kingwin internal 3.5-inch hard disk drive to 5.25-inch plastic mounting kit (hdm-228) and this reader fits perfectly and looks good. The reader comes with four screws for mounting.Indeed, i am able to mount multiple cards and a usb drive at the same time in this reader and work with each storage device at the same time, including copying files from one to another. This will come in quite handy. It's no speed demon, but it gets the job done. This card reader is much easier to use than my old card reader on a usb stick that i was using previously. A good product at a great price.

Ok not great
The star-tech had no real guides, so it is too easy to put a cf card in bent, and bend a pin. You need to be careful with this.
